Canada and U.S. Launch Clean Heat and Power Project

At a time when the world is making a historic transition to a low-carbon future, international collaboration is vital to supporting innovation and making progress. Kim Rudd, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Jim Carr, Canada's Minister of Natural
Resources, together with officials from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), officially launched a new clean heat and power demonstration project that could have significant benefits for the environment and the economy. The project produces power from
biomass or fossil fuels and has the potential to capture 98 percent of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
Natural Resources Canada's CanmetENERGY laboratory in Ottawa was chosen to host the project because of its exceptional facilities and the scientific expertise of its staff. Of the nearly US$12 million awarded by the DOE to the Gas Technology Institute,
CanmetENERGY received close to US$4.6 million for the project's construction and demonstration.
"This project demonstrates the important role clean energy technologies play in our transition to a lower-carbon economy. Canada and the United States share a bold vision for our continent: a vision based on collaboration, and one that secures North America's
place as one of the world's most dynamic energy regions. We will continue to work together to meet our climate change objectives, increase competitiveness and support employment opportunities," said Rudd.
Canada and the U.S. continue to cooperate on clean energy and climate change initiatives and are demonstrating continental leadership in advancing efforts toward a low-carbon economy. Both countries are among the founding members of Mission Innovation,
an international partnership of 21 members that have all committed to doubling their investments in clean energy research and development.
