Excellent Week for Harvest in Indiana
Indiana Ag Connection - 09/25/2018

Nearly ideal weather last week allowed harvest to progress at a rapid pace, according to Greg Matli, state statistician, USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. Temperatures that were much above average coupled with little rainfall was conducive to harvest. Corn for grain moisture was reported to be drier than normal for this time of the year which aided harvest. Second crop soybeans have reportedly responded well to favorable late summer growing conditions. The average temperature for the week was 72.9 degrees, 9.8 degrees above normal for the State. The amount of rainfall varied from none to 1.35 inches during the week. The statewide average precipitation was 0.29 inches. Rain that did fall was absorbed immediately and there was no run off or ponding. There were 5.9 days available for fieldwork for the week ending Sunday.

Last week was an excellent week for harvest. Growers continued to harvest corn, soybeans, popcorn, processing vegetables, silage, seed corn and apples. Winter wheat was planted where time and conditions allowed. Farmers continued to ready bins for storage of this year's crop and were signing up for the Market Facilitation Program at their local Farm Service Agency office.
