Grants to Preserve Local History Across State
Indiana Ag Connection - 10/19/2017

Grants to strengthen and preserve Indiana's history have been awarded to seven projects.

The grants total $275,865 in federal funds allotted by the DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology. They will be matched by $249,070 in local and private funds, for a total investment of $524,935. The funds come from the National Park Service, a part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, which distributes federal funds to the states through the Historic Preservation Fund Program.

This is the second of two such grant announcements for 2017. The first was in July and involved four projects. The 11 projects combine for a total investment of $830,992 in 2017.

Since 1974, the state has awarded more than $18 million to Indiana communities through this program.

Fulton County: Ball State University's Department of Anthropology received $48,685 to conduct an archaeological survey in Fulton County. The focus will be 900 acres in Henry, Union, Liberty and Wayne townships, and General Land Office (GLO) sites in Rochester Township.

Georgetown: The Town of Georgetown will receive $27,500 for exterior repairs on the Georgetown State Bank, including replacement of the three second-story windows and three exterior wood doors, repair of the wood and cast-iron storefront, and masonry rehabilitation.

Huntington: St. Peter's First Community Church will receive $50,000 to help stabilize and restore its building, the former Drover Town German Reformed Church. The project will focus on repointing mortar joints and repairing or replacing failing bricks, but will also repair damaged or deteriorating woodwork.

Indianapolis: The Irvington United Methodist Church will receive $50,000 for repairs to stop and correct deterioration and water infiltration. The church originated as a Tudor Revival house built in 1909. The building became Irvington Methodist Episcopal Church in 1924. The project will include fixing leaks, drains, the foundation, masonry and woodwork.

Indianapolis: The Irvington Historic Landmarks Foundation will receive $25,000 for exterior repairs to water damage at the Benton House. The Benton House is a two-story Second Empire style house built in 1873. It is named for former resident Allen Benton, a two-time Butler University president of Butler University when the college was in Irvington.

Lafayette: Trinity United Methodist Church will receive $50,000 to stabilize and rehabilitate the exterior masonry of the 1872 church.

Vincennes: The City of Vincennes will receive $24,500 to help prepare an assessment and rehabilitation plans for the Vincennes Police Department building. The department is housed in the former United States Post Office building, built in 1907 and expanded in 1936. It is an ornate neo-classical revival style building with an Indiana limestone façade. The city purchased the building in 2000 and the police department has occupied it since.
