K-State, Purdue, Virginia Tech Students Win Beef Scholarships

Undergraduates from Kansas State and Virginia Tech Universities, and a Penn State alum pursuing his masters degree at Purdue University were each awarded $1,000 Beef Scholarships during the 62nd Annual Keystone International Livestock Expo (KILE) at
the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg.
Recipients were chosen for excellence in academics, community involvement, commitment to the beef industry and involvement in KILE. Each winner received a check for $1,000, presented by Pennsylvania Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding at the Supreme
Champion Beef Pageant.
"These students represent the bright future of animal agriculture," said Secretary Redding. "Encouraging excellence in academics as well as showmanship and animal management will go a long way toward raising the workforce the U.S. beef industry needs to
stay number one in the world. I commend these three students for continuing that proud tradition of excellence."
Eligible students had to have shown cattle in a previous KILE Junior Beef Show, and must be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or post-secondary degree or certificate program in any field of study.
Scholarship recipients were:
- Nathan Briggs, of New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pa., graduate of Penn State University, is pursuing a master's degree Purdue University in animal science with a concentration in beef nutrition.
- Daniel Rohrbaugh of Seven Valleys, York County, Pa., first-year student majoring in agriculture business at Kansas State University.
- Brittany Truax of Harrisonville, Fulton County, Pa., Virginia Tech student majoring in animal and poultry science.
