INDOT Get $40 Million for I-65 Expansion

The Indiana Department of Transportation will receive two Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grants totaling $40 million, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced late yesterday. INDOT will be awarded two $20 million grants to help fund two projects to expand and rehabilitate Interstate 65.

"More than 1.5 billion tons of freight and millions of people rely on Indiana's interstate system every year, and freight movement on our interstates is forecast to grow by 60 percent in the next 30 years. With that growth in mind, I have identified widening our busiest interstates as an infrastructure priority for my administration," Governor Eric J. Holcomb said. "Our interstates are vital to attracting and retaining Hoosier jobs and growing our state and national economy. I want to thank Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao for partnering with Indiana to invest in our infrastructure and our Indiana congressional delegation for supporting these efforts."

The funds awarded to Indiana will support projects to add lanes to I-65 between S.R. 32 and S.R. 47 in Boone County and between S.R. 58 and S.R. 46 in Bartholomew County. Existing pavement will rehabilitated and various bridges will be rehabilitated or replaced along both segments.

"Through the Governor's Next Level Roads plan, Indiana is making record investments in our highway system coupled with a surge of investment in local roads through partnership programs like Community Crossings and Local Trax. Our is state is making a historic commitment to infrastructure," Indiana Department of Transportation Commissioner Joe McGuinness said. "Indiana's efforts are being noticed across the country, including in Washington D.C. I want to thank the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration for partnering with us to enhance our transportation network."
