Indiana winter wheat seeded area for 2019 is estimated at 300,000 acres, a decrease of 3 percent from last year, according to Greg Matli, state statistician of USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office. Indiana winter wheat planting and emergence progress was moving steadily along until cold temperatures slowed winter wheat progress. At the end of November, 63 percent of the crop was rated good to excellent condition, down 12 percentage points from the same time last year.

U.S. winter wheat planted area for harvest in 2019 is estimated at 31.3 million acres, down 4 percent from 2018 and down 4 percent from 2017. This represents the second lowest United States acreage on record. Seedings, which began in early September, fell behind the 5-year average seeding pace in early October and remained behind the 5-year average seeding pace for the duration of the planting season. Seeding was mostly complete by November 11.
