Indiana 2018 Popcorn Production Pretty Good

The 2018 growing season led to another good popcorn crop despite a slow start and a delayed harvest, according to Greg Matli, state statistician for the USDA NASS, Indiana Field Office.

Indiana growers planted 79,000 acres of popcorn in 2018, down 4,000 acres from 2017. A total of 78,000 acres were harvested, also down 4,000 acres from last year. The 2018 average yield, at 48.0 cwt per acre, tied the second highest yield on record. The 2018 yield was down 1 cwt from the year before.

Total production was 3.74 million cwt, down 7 percent from a year ago. The average price was $16.30 per cwt, down $0.70 from the previous year. The crop value of production was $61.0 million dollars, down 11 percent from last year.
