Indiana Crop Values Decrease 12%

The total value of Indiana crops in 2008 decreased 12 percent from a year earlier to $6.16 billion, reports the state field office of USDA's National Ag Statistics Service.

The total value of corn decreased 24 percent. Corn production decreased 11 percent during 2008, with the average price decreasing from $4.39 in 2007 to $3.75 per bushel in 2008.

Soybean production increased 11 percent while the average price per bushel of soybeans decreased from $10.20 to $9.30 per bushel. The total value of production increased 1 percent.

Winter wheat's value of production showed a 113 percent increase, while its total production increased 86 percent. In addition, the average price of winter wheat increased 75 cents per bushel to $5.95.

The total value of oats decreased 8 percent during 2008, along with total production decreasing 12 percent. The average price per bushel for oats increased 15 cents to $3.90.

Popcorn production decreased 5 percent with a 24 percent increase in total value.

The remaining crops showed increases in total value from the previous year: all hay, up 27 percent; peppermint, up 4 percent; spearmint, up 27 percent; apples, up 55 percent; and blueberries, up 117 percent.
