School Presentations Commemorate Earth Day
Indiana Ag Connection - 04/23/2018

Earth Day is here and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is once again reaching out to grade schools with interactive presentations on air, land, water, and recycling. IDEM staff will make approximately 250 presentations at 140 schools across the state in April.

"Visiting classrooms is an excellent way to reach students early to teach them about taking care of the earth," said IDEM Commissioner Bruno Pigott. "If we teach children how to recycle, compost and protect the environment, it will be a habit when they become adults. "Kids have a great interest in learning and they are good at prompting adults to take action. We have heard of families that began recycling because of actions their child learned from a presentation. Kids have an excitement and energy that is contagious. When they learn something they are ready to apply it."

This year's free Earth Day presentations are taking place from through April 30 for grades K through 4. Presentations range from 30 to 50 minutes, and each school may have up to four. Some of this year's presentations will be composting with worms, water quality, pollution prevention, e-waste (electronics), land quality, air quality and EnviroQuiz. While the 2018 deadline for presentation requests is past, teachers can request an Earth Day presentation for 2019 at the beginning of the year.

IDEM also has professional staff members available year round to serve as guest speakers for schools and organizations. IDEM lesson plans are designed to engage students in hands-on activities with clearly defined objectives and materials. Teachers may request a presentation any time by contacting IDEM's Environmental Education Coordinator at 1-800-988-7901, (317) 232-8172, or email education@idem.IN.gov.
