A few hours of inconvenience for thousands of motorists in Indiana could improve electric service reliability for Indiana electric cooperative members for decades to come.

Hoosier Energy recently worked with contractors, Indiana State Police, the Indiana Department of Transportation and local law enforcement to move a huge transformer from a rail siding to the G&T's 345-kilovolt Bloomington Primary Substation, reports Electric Co-op Today.

The backup transformer joins two other in-service transformers, one of which was installed two years ago after one of the pair failed in service.

It will service as an essential part of Hoosier Energy's grid reliability system for its 18 distribution co-ops in the event of an unforeseen interruption to power delivery, said Brady Mann, Hoosier Energy's manager of delivery services.

"The transformer is used to raise or lower voltage in our power delivery system so it can be safely transmitted to distribution co-op lines for member use," said Mann.

After consulting the highway department and traffic safety stakeholders, co-op officials determined both southbound lanes of the highway would be needed to safely accommodate the load's 13-feet width.

The 16-foot height of the transformer housing, coupled with the carriage height of the trailer used to haul the unit and the overall load of 300 tons raised bridge and clearance concerns, making S-R 37 the only available route. Traffic on the affected section of the roadway was restricted for just over three hours on May 19.

The second phase of the transport operation occurred the following day after it was transferred to a smaller trailer capable of using a narrower service road. Final connections of the unit are pending.
