Bread for the World Honors Lugar in Feeding the Hungry
Indiana Ag Connection - 06/13/2012

Dave Miner, of Indianapolis and chairman of Bread for World, presents an award to U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar in appreciation for his "leadership to end hunger during 36 years of service in the U.S. Senate and ongoing support for Bread for the World."

Lugar said that "the moral leadership of our country comes frequently in a most basic way and that is feeding the people; the provisions of opportunities for sustenance, then for nourishment, and for the growth of children and maintenance of families."

Lugar has been a leader in preserving U.S. nutrition programs -- particularly saving the federal school lunch program in 1996, expanding children feeding programs to the summer months, and changing the tax code to allow greater donations of food to food banks and food pantries. He has passed legislation to increase research on how to increase crop yields to feed the expanding world population. He has been a long time supporter of the Dole-McGovern global school feeding program, recognizing not only the humanitarian necessity of feeding the world's starving people but that the prospects of a billion hungry people in the world is a major factor in political destabilization.

Lugar pledged to continue his work for many years to come.
