Indiana Ag Connection - 06/08/2023

Indiana's Tulip Tree Creamery has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Dairy Business Innovation Alliance (DBIA), a partnership between the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association (WCMA) and the Center for Dairy Research (CDR) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The DBIA recently announced the selection of 26 companies and cooperatives to receive Dairy Business Builder grants totaling $2.3 million. These grants aim to support small- to medium-sized dairy farmers, entrepreneurs, and processors in the Upper Midwest region in pursuing innovative projects.

The 26 awardees represent all 11 states served by DBIA, with 18 of them receiving the grant for the first time. Notably, 12 of the recipients are farmsteads, highlighting the importance of supporting local and sustainable dairy operations.

The Dairy Business Builder grant program encourages projects such as dairy farm diversification, on-farm processing, value-added product creation, and the expansion of dairy product exports. Through a competitive review process, reimbursement grants of up to $100,000 each are awarded. The next application period for DBIA grants will open on August 28, 2023.

CDR Director John Lucey emphasized the significance of these grants, stating, "These grants have become an important factor in helping support the growth of our dairy businesses in our region as they continue to innovate by creating new products or expanding their markets."

WCMA Executive Director John Umhoefer added, "This group of projects showcases the innovative spirit and drive of our dairy industry. We're pleased to help these businesses, and the industry as a whole, continue to grow and thrive."

The DBIA is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and has played a crucial role in administering over $9.4 million in grants to 103 dairy businesses since its inception as part of the 2018 Farm Bill. The program also provides technical assistance and education to dairy farmers and processors in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

The grant awarded to Tulip Tree Creamery underscores the commitment to fostering innovation and growth within the dairy industry, supporting the development of high-quality dairy products and sustainable practices in the region.
