BOAH: National Swine Studies Rescheduled to 2021
Indiana Ag Connection - 06/02/2020
Next summer, pork producers, both commercial and exhibition, may be asked to participate in one of two national studies. Data collected will help the U.S. swine industry better prepare for swine disease events by identifying strengths and areas of improvement throughout the pork industry. These studies were originally scheduled to begin this month.
This national study has been conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for more than 30 years. Participation is voluntary and the privacy of every participant is protected.
The two studies are based on operation size.
1. Small enterprise producers (less than 1,000 pigs)
2. Large enterprise producers (1,000 pigs or more)
This marks the sixth study for large operations and the third for smaller farms.
Selected small enterprise producers will receive a letter in the mail from the National Agriculture Statistic Service (NASS) in June 2021 and will be asked to complete a questionnaire via mail, online or phone.
In July 2021, selected large enterprise producers will receive a letter in the mail from NASS. They will also be contacted by a NASS representative to schedule an interview and complete a questionnaire. Large enterprise producers that fully participate in the study will be offered free biologics testing (Salmonella, E. coli and Enterococcus fecal cultures, antimicrobial susceptibility, and Seneca Virus A) for grower/finisher pigs during a follow-up visit
The Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) is partnering with USDA to collect information and samples from Indiana producers.
Information gathered will help Indiana's swine industry to understand disease preparedness strengths and vulnerabilities, as well as help policy makers and industry stakeholders make science-based decisions.
