Limestone Carving at Paynetown Saturdays in September
Indiana Ag Connection - 08/31/2016

Visitors to Paynetown State Recreation Area on Monroe Lake in September can watch local limestone artist Amy Brier and an assistant carve a roliquery.

The carving demonstration will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday during the month at the Activity Center Shelter next to the beach.

A roliquery is a limestone ball with a design carved into it. When rolled in sand, the roliquery leaves a pattern reflecting the carved design. Some roliqueries leave behind a trail of faces, or oak leaves or fish. More information is at amybrier.com.

The artists will interact with the public and share the story of stone as a natural resource, including its significance to American history and artistic merits.

Visitors can watch the limestone being shaped and ask questions. They can also try the tools themselves on a stone reserved for that purpose.

This activity is a signature project of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, and is made possible, in part, with support from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Property admission is $7 per in-state vehicle or $9 per out-of-state vehicle.

Monroe Lake (stateparks.IN.gov/2954.htm) is at 4850 South State Road 446, Bloomington.
